Hot Beauty Jobs: Platform Artist

This week’s ‘hot job’ we’re featuring is one of the most exciting jobs in the beauty industry right now! When you work as a platform artist, you’ll travel around the country (possibly even the world) performing on stage at beauty shows and high-profile industry events. The job is equal parts entertaining, educating, and selling, so you must be skilled in each one of the areas in order to find success as a platform artist.

Each performance you give will be slightly different. You could be promoting a product, endorsing a new tool, or showcasing a cutting or coloring technique. 1. The first part of being a successful platform artist is mastering the technical skills. Cosmetology school will give you hands-on training in the latest cutting, coloring, and styling techniques. You’ll also learn retailing and business skills that will be extremely valuable in your future career as a platform artist.  Once you graduate from cosmetology school, you’ll need to pass your State Board exam in order to obtain your cosmetology license.
2. You need to be extremely fashion-forward in order to be a platform artist. Even after you graduate from cosmetology school, you should enroll in continuing education classes in order to stay on top of all the latest trends and techniques in the beauty industry.  Jump at every opportunity you can to build yourself an up-to-date and impressive cosmetology portfolio!
3. Most platform artists start off working as educators for product lines. Identify the product line you’d like to work for and apply for an entry-level educator position. Never underestimate the power of networking! If you happen to meet one of their representatives at a hair show or industry event, make sure you have your resume and portfolio on hand and express your interest in working for them.
4. Once you get your foot in the door and start working for the company, go above and beyond in your duties as an educator. If you continue to excel, it’s likely that you’ll be considered for a promotion to platform artist. This means being professional, enthusiastic, and offering to help your colleagues any chance you may get. It’s also a good idea to find a fellow platform artist who’s willing to act as your mentor. This person can give you valuable advice on how to follow in their footsteps and also recommend you for a future promotion.
